Its aim is to collect data on entrepreneurial activity worldwide through an extensive international network currently spanning more than 49 countries, making the report a global reference in the study of entrepreneurship.

Institut Opinòmetre participates as the survey provider for Spain, as a technical adviser in preparing the Saudi Arabia report, and as a supervisor of fieldwork in that country and in the United Arab Emirates.

One notable development this year is the introduction of a new index, the National Entrepreneurship Context Index (NECI). It provides a single score summarising a country’s overall environment for entrepreneurial activity. Dr Alicia Coduras, Senior Statistical Specialist at Institut Opinòmetre, developed the index’s conceptual framework and mathematical formula. As a weighted average of the 12 pillars describing the main conditions for entrepreneurship, including finance, government policies and programmes, entrepreneurial education and training, R&D transfer, legal and commercial infrastructure, domestic market conditions, physical and service infrastructure, and social and cultural norms, the index has made it possible to establish a country ranking in this area for the first time. The weights reflect the importance assigned by the experts assessing these conditions to their contribution to the overall entrepreneurial environment in the current year. The GEM Spain report will be presented in the coming months.

Some of the report’s key findings:

Almost 1 in 5 entrepreneurs works with family members. Colombia, the United Arab Emirates and Uruguay have the highest levels of family entrepreneurship, accounting for more than one third of entrepreneurs in those countries.

The Republic of Korea has the highest rate of participation in the gig economy, defined as self-run businesses supported by digital tools, and the sharing economy, involving more than 20% of the adult population. Israel, Chile, Ireland and the United States also have high rates, with more than 10% of adults involved in these activities. This new international comparison shows that participation in this economic activity is significant worldwide.

In low-income economies, wholesale businesses account for more than half of entrepreneurs. By contrast, in high-income economies, almost 50% or more of entrepreneurial activity takes place in service or technology industries.

In three European countries, the Netherlands, Poland and Sweden, around three quarters of adults say it is easy to start a business in their country, the highest proportions among the 49 economies studied. In the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Thailand, Guatemala and Madagascar, more than 80% of people regard entrepreneurship as a good opportunity for the future. Thailand also has the highest proportion of adults, 87%, who believe that the media portray entrepreneurs positively. Sweden leads in perceptions of entrepreneurial opportunities: 82% of adults believe there are many opportunities to start new businesses in their country.

You can download the full report here.

The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is a research project that has been running for 20 years.
