UAB foreign language survey
Institut Opinòmetre has conducted the Survey of Needs and Demand for Foreign Language Training at the language services of Catalan universities, commissioned by the Interuniversity Commission for Language Training and Accreditation of Catalonia (CIFALC).
The aim of the study was to understand the reasons for the decline in enrolment on regular foreign language courses offered by university language services.
The study combined quantitative and qualitative methods in 3 phases to maximise methodological efficiency: an initial qualitative phase involving 3 focus groups to develop the questionnaire; a multichannel quantitative phase using telephone interviews for adults, face-to-face interviews for upper-secondary students and self-administered online questionnaires for university students; and a final analysis phase involving 4 focus groups. In total, 7 focus groups and 2,457 surveys were conducted.
