A new traffic and transport model for the objectives of Málaga’s Special Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PEMUS), 2018.
Between October and December 2018, Málaga City Council conducted 30,000 surveys of pedestrians, drivers, cyclists, public transport users and tourists to develop a model of the city’s mobility using simulation software. This tool will help diagnose mobility problems, assess the impact of interventions in public space, prioritise their implementation over time and reduce the difficulties associated with putting them into practice.
Institut Opinòmetre collaborated on the project with DOYMO, the company awarded the public contract.
The surveys were conducted at locations agreed with the City Council, with support from the city’s transport operators and local police. Both the contractor and the City Council asked residents to take part in the household, telephone and on-street surveys. The target population comprised Málaga residents aged between 14 and 80. Respondents were to be sampled by area, in proportion to the resident population of each area.
The data will show how many trips enter and leave each of the study areas every day. The aim is to update and expand the findings of previous mobility surveys and analyse changes over time, with the last comparable survey dating from 2009.
The study also seeks to collect the information needed to understand trip origins and destinations, transport modes, including walking, public transport, bicycles and private vehicles, reasons for travel, such as work, study and leisure, and time bands.
